Impact paintings
Impacts are paintings done quickly to capture the effects of light and color. Used as studies for paintings or as a finished painting itself. May be done in any medium and all subjects are fair game!
There best done on a time limit: 20 to 30 min. for 8 x 10 - 9 x 12 60 min. for 16 x 20 - 18 x 24 and larger, done in one sitting on location or in studio.
The key is to divide the time into steps: 5 to 7 min per step on small & 15 min on larger impacts.
Steps: 1. (DESIGN) shapes, get the big shapes.
Steps: 1. (DESIGN) shapes, get the big shapes.
2. (DARKS) anything dark and in shadow.
3. (BACK GROUND)
4. (LIGHTS)
The object is speed and observation. Set a timer for each step, and when the timer goes off move on to step 2 finished or not with the first step. Each step is complete when the timer sounds. When the final timer sounds put the brush down. The painting is completed.
The more impacts you do the faster you get, soon you won't need a timer. (You should do one impact painting a day, for a year ). This will improve your painting and observation skills greatly.
On Wednesday 1/6/2013 I will post photos of all 4 steps. On 1/7/2013 I will post 1 impact a day , I welcome all thought's and comments.
